General

Abu Dhabi has exceptional year-round golf facilities that position the emirate as a prime destination for golf enthusiasts from around the world. Whether visitors are looking to play a few leisurely rounds of holiday golf or some serious games, or are golf tournament spectators, Abu Dhabi’s first-rate golf courses and numerous championships cater to every need.

Golf courses in Abu Dhabi are either grass or sand, and sometimes a mixture of the two. Sand, or brown courses, are created by compacting a mixture of oil and sand to form a putting area with a similar surface to grass. Green course fans can play a challenging round at Abu Dhabi Golf Club’s 18-hole 7,204-yard, par 72 National Course or a more forgiving round on the club’s 9-hole 3,299-yard, par 36 Garden Course – both designed by Peter Harradine.

Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi City Golf Club’s 9-hole floodlit Golf Course presents itself as a little green gem. Previously known as Abu Dhabi Golf and Equestrian Club, the facility goes back to 1976 and has a long history regarding Golf in Abu Dhabi. The 6,350 yard, par 70 course is a tranquil oasis in the middle of the bustling city. The Course offers Night-Golf, with tee-off times up until 8.30 pm.

A brand-new fleet of GPS equipped Golf Carts, as well as the currently constructed first 2-tiered driving range in the UAE provide visitors and members alike with a well positioned product and enjoyable Golf for all levels.
Abu Dhabi International Airport has its own golf club – Al Ghazal Golf Club – making it the ideal destination for people on short business trips in Abu Dhabi or those in transit. Abu Dhabi International Airport provides transportation to the club as well as transit visas, allowing passengers to play a round between flights. The 18-hole, 6,711 yard, par 71 sand golf course is considered one of the leading desert courses in the world, with its front nine holes (par 35) circling an archaeological site.

Outside the capital w:st="on"Abu Dhabi, three other golf courses cater to golf enthusiasts. Al Ain Golf Club, located near Al Ain Intercontinental Hotel and Resort, is an 18-hole, 6,715 yard sand course. Golfers playing the brown course carry a small piece of Astroturf from which to tee. The second golf course in Al Ain lies within the grounds of the Hilton Hotel and is a 9-hole, par 3 green course popular with hotel guests and city residents. Al Dhafra Golf Links in Ruwais, some 240 kilometres west of the capital, is a 9-hole, 5,429 yard par 68 course. The sand course is located near the coast, alongside the Al Dhafra Beach Hotel.

Although mainly accessible to oilfield employees in the Abu Dhabi desert, several brown courses with not so much as a blade of grass and towering sand dunes offer seasoned golfers a highly challenging game. These include the Shah Golf Club, located on the northern edge of the Empty Quarter.

In addition to the existing golf courses in Abu Dhabi, several more have been announced, including two courses on Saadiyat Island, three on Yas Island and a 27 hole course on Reem Island.

All golf clubs in Abu Dhabi are open to non-members. In addition to driving ranges and pro shops, all clubs feature golf academies that provide coaching by resident professionals. Facilities include health clubs, swimming pools, tennis courts and snooker, as well as a range of eating and drinking options from casual sports bars to fine dining restaurants.

Abu Dhabi is home to the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, a European Tour golf tournament that was held for the first time in January 2006. The tournament is held annually at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club and draws some of the world's leading golfers.

The Abu Dhabi World Sand Golf Championship, the world’s first international golf tournament to be played on sand, is held at Al Ghazal Golf Club. The annual event is a relaxed fun event for tour professionals and a chance for local golfers to play a round with the world’s top players.
